Robot ultrasound vs handheld: which is better for breast cancer checks?
NCT ID NCT05408260
First seen Jan 09, 2026 · Last updated Jun 20, 2026 · Updated 21 times
Summary
This study looked at whether an automated breast ultrasound (ABUS) machine can be used instead of a handheld ultrasound (HHUS) to screen for breast cancer in women who have had breast reconstruction after cancer. Twelve women who had nipple-sparing or skin-sparing mastectomy with reconstruction were scanned with both methods. The goal was to see if ABUS could detect leftover tissue (artifacts) as well as HHUS. If it works, ABUS could offer a more standardized and less operator-dependent screening option.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Ultrasound imaging (automated and handheld)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that automated breast ultrasound is a reliable, easier option for routine cancer surveillance in women who have had breast reconstruction.
What could go wrong
This is a very small, early feasibility study with only 12 participants. It does not measure cancer detection directly, only imaging artifacts, so results may not change practice.
