Gentle belly massage may speed gut recovery after colon cancer surgery
NCT ID NCT07713472
First seen Jul 20, 2026 · Last updated Jul 21, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This trial investigates whether gentle abdominal massage, performed early after colon cancer surgery, can help the intestines start working again more quickly. Many patients experience a temporary slowdown in gut function (postoperative ileus) that causes bloating, pain, and nausea. The study compares standard recovery care with and without abdominal massage in 225 adults undergoing colon cancer surgery. The goal is to see if massage reduces the time to first bowel movement and tolerance of solid food.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- abdominal massage
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this simple, low-cost technique could become a standard part of recovery after colon surgery, helping patients feel better sooner.
- What could go wrong
- This is a relatively small trial, and the effect of massage may be modest or no better than current care. Results may not apply to all types of surgery.
