Could a common b vitamin tame fatty liver?
NCT ID NCT07740109
First seen Jul 31, 2026 · Last updated Jul 31, 2026
Summary
This trial tests whether a daily supplement of 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (a form of folate) can improve markers of liver health in people with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), a common type of fatty liver. Over 90 days, participants receive either the supplement or a placebo. Researchers will measure changes in blood folate, homocysteine, liver enzymes, and the activity of genes linked to inflammation and fat metabolism.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF), a form of folate, taken as an 800 mcg tablet daily for 90 days
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could point toward a simple, safe supplement to help manage fatty liver disease and lower heart-risk markers.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage trial, so results may not apply broadly. The supplement may not change liver health or gene activity as hoped.
