Free 3D lung maps could make surgery safer
NCT ID NCT06132607
First seen Apr 12, 2026 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026 · Updated 13 times
Summary
This study tested whether free, open-source software can create 3D models of the lungs to help surgeons during lung cancer surgery. 13 patients scheduled for lung surgery had their CT scans turned into 3D reconstructions. The goal was to see if these models were easy for surgeons to use and accurate compared to standard 2D scans.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
open-source software for 3D lung reconstruction
What this could lead to
If successful, this could make 3D lung models widely available without expensive commercial software, potentially improving surgical precision.
What could go wrong
This was a very small study (13 patients) focused on usability, not on patient outcomes. Larger trials are needed to confirm any real benefit.
