Sip test could replace X-Rays for tracheostomy patients

NCT ID NCT06120790

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 23, 2026 · Updated 36 times

Summary

This study tests whether a quick, 3-ounce water swallow test can accurately detect if people with a tracheostomy are aspirating (liquid going into the lungs). Researchers will compare the water test results with the current gold-standard methods (a camera through the nose or an X-ray video). 80 adults with a tracheostomy who are alert and not already on a special diet will participate. If the water test works well, it could offer a simpler, faster, and less expensive way to check swallowing safety.
