MONDO:0002120A malignant neuroendocrine neoplasm composed of cells containing secretory granules that stain positive for NSE and chromogranin. The neoplastic cells are often round and form clusters or trabecular sheets. Representative examples are small cell carcinoma, large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma, and Merkel cell carcinoma.
Also known as: NEC, neuroendocrine cancer, neuroendocrine carcinoma

New combo attack on stubborn cancers shows promise in early trial
Disease control CompletedThis phase II trial tests whether combining the immunotherapy drug nivolumab with the chemotherapy drug temozolomide can shrink tumors in people with small-cell lung cancer that has returned or not responded to treatment, or advanced neuroendocrine tumors. About 55 participants w…

Can a black seed extract boost immunotherapy against a rare cancer?
Disease control CompletedThis pilot trial is testing whether adding NP-101, a compound from black seed oil, to two immunotherapy drugs (nivolumab and ipilimumab) can help control advanced or metastatic extra-pulmonary neuroendocrine carcinoma (EP-NECA) that has progressed after initial treatment. About 1…

Two-Drug combo aims to stall rare gut tumors
Disease control CompletedThis trial tests whether combining two drugs—RAD001 (everolimus) and octreotide depot—can slow tumor growth in people with advanced low-grade neuroendocrine cancer (carcinoid or islet cell tumors) that has spread or cannot be removed surgically. Participants take RAD001 daily by …

Could a PARP inhibitor boost chemo for tough lung cancer?
Disease control CompletedThis study tested whether adding veliparib (a PARP inhibitor) to standard chemotherapy (cisplatin and etoposide) helps people with extensive stage small cell lung cancer or certain other lung cancers that have spread. In the first phase, researchers found the best dose of velipar…

New combo therapy shows promise for rare gut and lung cancers
Disease control CompletedThis phase 2 trial tested a combination of two drugs—pembrolizumab (Keytruda) and lenvatinib (Lenvima)—in 20 people with advanced neuroendocrine tumors that had worsened despite prior treatments. The goal was to see if the combination could shrink tumors or slow disease progressi…

PET scan study hints at new hope for tough gut cancer
Knowledge-focused CompletedThis study looked at 30 adults with a rare, fast-growing type of gut cancer called poorly differentiated neuroendocrine carcinoma. Researchers used a special PET scan (68Ga-DOTATATE) to measure how much of a protein called somatostatin receptor is present on tumors. The goal was …
