Tooth crown showdown: zirconia vs. metal for kids
NCT ID NCT05910905
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 24, 2026
Summary
This study tested two types of dental crowns for children's back teeth: white zirconia crowns and traditional silver-colored metal crowns. Researchers treated 35 healthy kids aged 6-9 with cavities on multiple tooth surfaces. They checked how well each crown held up and asked parents which they liked better. The goal was to see if the newer zirconia crowns work as well as the standard metal ones.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
prefabricated pediatric zirconia crown and prefabricated stainless steel crown
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that zirconia crowns are a better-looking and equally effective option for restoring decayed baby molars in children.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed study with only 35 children, so results may not apply to all kids. Crowns can still fail due to fractures or new decay.
