Scientists dig into the vaginal microbiome to unlock secrets of recurrent yeast infections

NCT ID NCT04930107

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study looks at 120 Canadian women to understand why some get repeated yeast infections while others don't. Researchers will compare the vaginal yeast and bacteria of women with their first infection, those with recurrent infections, and those with yeast but no symptoms. Participants will receive standard treatments (fluconazole or boric acid) and be followed to see how their microbial communities change. The goal is to learn more about what causes recurrent infections and how treatments affect the vaginal environment.

What this could lead to

If successful, this study could help explain why some women get repeated yeast infections and point to better treatment strategies.
