Healthy volunteers deliberately infected with whooping cough to study natural immunity

NCT ID NCT05847322

First seen May 20, 2026 · Last updated Jun 11, 2026 · Updated 7 times

Summary

This study aims to safely expose 72 healthy adults to the bacteria that cause whooping cough. Participants will not receive antibiotics right away, allowing researchers to see how the body naturally clears the infection over up to 6 weeks. The goal is to learn about the bacteria's behavior, immune response, and whether it spreads to close contacts. This is not a treatment study, but a way to gather knowledge for future vaccines or therapies.
