Weekly doxycycline shows promise for STI prevention in kenyan women on PrEP

NCT ID NCT06582966

First seen Apr 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 12, 2026 · Updated 5 times

Summary

This study tested whether taking a weekly dose of the antibiotic doxycycline can prevent bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in cisgender women who are already taking daily PrEP to prevent HIV. The study involved 60 women aged 18-30 in Kisumu, Kenya, and focused on making it easy to stick with the weekly pill routine. The goal was to see if this approach works better than taking doxycycline only after sex, which didn't work well in a previous study because women often forgot to take it.
