Could special contact lenses put the brakes on childhood nearsightedness?

NCT ID NCT06598423

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether wearing specialized soft contact lenses for short periods each day can slow the progression of nearsightedness (myopia) in children. Eighty kids who already wear contacts will use one of two lens types daily for a year. Researchers will measure changes in their vision and eye length to see if the lenses help control myopia.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

specialized soft contact lenses with different spectral profiles

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a simple, non-drug way to slow worsening nearsightedness in children, potentially reducing the need for stronger glasses later.

What could go wrong

This is a small pilot study with no placebo group, so results may not be conclusive. The lenses must be worn daily for at least 10 hours, and some children may find them uncomfortable or develop eye irritation.
