New drug may supercharge walking recovery after spinal cord injury
NCT ID NCT05217498
First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated Apr 25, 2026 · Updated 24 times
Summary
This study tests whether a drug called istradefylline can make walking therapy more effective for people with chronic, incomplete spinal cord injury. The therapy uses brief low-oxygen breathing to spark nerve growth, but a natural chemical called adenosine may limit its benefits. The drug blocks adenosine to help the nervous system strengthen walking pathways. About 40 adults aged 18-75 with long-term spinal cord injury will take part.
