New combo therapy shows promise for walking after spinal injury

NCT ID NCT03922802

First seen Jan 30, 2026 · Last updated May 15, 2026 · Updated 17 times

Summary

This small study tested whether adding two non-invasive treatments—brief breathing of low-oxygen air (acute intermittent hypoxia) and mild electrical stimulation on the back—to standard walking therapy could improve walking and balance in people with spinal cord injury. Fourteen adults with chronic spinal cord injury participated. The results help researchers understand if these add-on therapies can boost recovery beyond traditional gait training alone.
