VR training shows promise for stroke recovery
NCT ID NCT06780488
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This pilot study tests whether a virtual reality program that stimulates the visual and balance systems can help stroke survivors improve their balance and walking. 38 participants, at least 6 months past their stroke, will be randomly assigned to either the real VR training or a sham version. They will complete 12 sessions over 4 weeks, and their balance, gait, and quality of life will be measured before, after, and one month later.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Virtual reality-based rehabilitation exercises
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a new, engaging way to improve balance and walking in people who have had a stroke.
What could go wrong
This is a small pilot study with only 38 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The sham group also gets VR, so the added benefit of the specific visual-vestibular stimuli may be small.
