Pictures may boost anesthesia consent understanding

NCT ID NCT07461480

First seen Jun 27, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether adding visual aids to the standard written consent form helps patients better understand anesthesia procedures and risks. About 236 adults scheduled for surgery will be randomly assigned to receive either the usual consent form or one with extra pictures. Their understanding will be checked 30 minutes later with a questionnaire. The goal is to see if visual support improves patient knowledge and awareness.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ€” not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
visual support material (educational tool)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could improve how well patients understand anesthesia risks and consent, leading to better informed decision-making before surgery.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study (236 participants) testing a communication tool, not a treatment. The results may not apply to all patients or settings, and the benefit may be modest.
