Could virtual reality ease the mental toll of ICU stays?
NCT ID NCT06267911
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests a non-immersive virtual reality program (RGS-ICU) for ICU patients. The program includes daily 20-minute sessions of cognitive exercises and psychological support alongside standard care. Researchers will enroll 93 adults in ICUs for respiratory failure, cardiogenic shock, or septic shock. The goal is to see if this approach improves comfort during the ICU stay and boosts thinking and mental health up to 12 months after discharge.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
non-immersive virtual reality-based cognitive stimulation and psychological support program (RGS-ICU)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a safe, drug-free way to help ICU survivors recover thinking skills and emotional well-being, reducing long-term mental health issues.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 93 participants. The program may not show clear benefits over standard care, and some patients may not tolerate the sessions.
