3D movies may replace eye patches for lazy eye treatment

NCT ID NCT05439200

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether watching special 3D movies at home can improve vision in children aged 3 to 7 with lazy eye (amblyopia). Half the children will watch the movies on a handheld 3D screen, while the other half will use a standard eye patch. The goal is to see if the movie method works better and is easier for kids to stick with.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Asynchronous 3D movies viewed on a handheld lenticular 3D screen

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a fun, easy-to-follow alternative to eye patching for treating lazy eye in young children.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study with only 44 children, so results may not apply to everyone. The 3D movie method may not work as well as patching, and some children might not tolerate the device.
