A simple vein pressure reading may warn of kidney failure days earlier
NCT ID NCT07722325
First seen Jul 23, 2026 · Last updated Jul 24, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
Acute kidney injury is a common and dangerous complication in intensive care, but current tests often detect it too late. This observational study tests whether a pressure gradient in the veins — the difference between the driving force for blood return and the central vein pressure — can predict kidney injury earlier. Researchers will measure this gradient in 180 ICU patients who are at risk but have not yet developed kidney injury, and track whether it correlates with later kidney damage.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- What this could lead to
- If the venous return pressure gradient proves reliable, it could give doctors a simple, earlier way to predict acute kidney injury in ICU patients.
- What could go wrong
- This is an observational study, not a treatment trial, so it cannot show cause and effect. The measurement method is specialized and may not be widely available.
