Can a targeted pill combo tame acute myeloid leukemia without harsh chemo?
NCT ID NCT07773909
First seen Aug 19, 2026 ยท Last updated Aug 19, 2026
Summary
This trial tests whether a combination of venetoclax (a targeted pill) plus a hypomethylating agent (azacitidine or decitabine) can help adults with newly diagnosed acute myeloid leukemia who are not eligible for intensive chemotherapy. The study includes older patients, those with health issues, and younger patients who cannot afford intensive treatment. After one 28-day cycle, researchers will check bone marrow to see if the cancer goes into remission, and they will also monitor blood counts, side effects, and survival.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- venetoclax combined with a hypomethylating agent (azacitidine or decitabine), plus voriconazole as antifungal prophylaxis
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could offer a gentler, effective treatment option for AML patients who cannot tolerate intensive chemotherapy, including those with financial barriers.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, single-center study with only 24 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The treatment can cause side effects, and the short follow-up limits conclusions about long-term benefit.
