New drug combo aims to spare seniors from chemo

NCT ID NCT05025423

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This phase 2 trial tested a combination of two drugs, venetoclax and rituximab, as a first treatment for people over 60 with mantle cell lymphoma. The goal was to see if this chemo-free approach could shrink or control the cancer. However, the study was stopped early after enrolling only 7 participants, so we don't have enough data to know if it works.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

venetoclax and rituximab

What this could lead to

If successful, this could offer a chemotherapy-free initial treatment option for older patients with mantle cell lymphoma.

What could go wrong

The trial was terminated early with only 7 participants, so results are very limited. It is unclear if the combination is effective or safe enough to replace standard treatments.
