Bone injection may beat IV for preventing amputation infections

NCT ID NCT07338773

First seen Jan 19, 2026 · Last updated May 12, 2026 · Updated 16 times

Summary

This study tests whether giving the antibiotic vancomycin directly into the bone (intraosseous) during diabetic foot amputation works better than the usual IV method to prevent surgical infections. About 40 adults with diabetes having below-knee amputation will be randomly assigned to one of the two methods. Researchers will measure antibiotic levels at the wound site and track infections, kidney function, and need for repeat surgery over 90 days.
