Could a contraceptive gel ward off vaginal infections?
NCT ID NCT05753813
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This early study tests whether a lactic acid gel (Phexxi) used twice weekly can change the vaginal microbiome to help prevent recurrent bacterial vaginosis and yeast infections. 22 premenopausal women with a history of these infections will use the gel for 4 weeks. Researchers will track changes in vaginal bacteria and symptoms.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
lactic acid gel (Phexxi)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a non-antibiotic way to prevent recurrent vaginal infections by boosting healthy bacteria.
What could go wrong
This is a very early, small study with only 22 people. It may not show a clear benefit, and results may not apply to everyone.
