Weight loss and drug combo may dissolve kidney stone risk
NCT ID NCT04370093
First seen Sep 30, 2025 · Last updated Apr 30, 2026 · Updated 27 times
Summary
This study tested whether the diabetes drug pioglitazone, weight loss, or both could raise urine pH in overweight adults with uric acid kidney stones. Higher urine pH makes it harder for stones to form. Twenty-nine participants followed a fixed diet and took either the drug, a placebo, or joined a weight-loss program for 24 weeks. The main goal was to see if these approaches could safely reduce stone risk.
