Ultrasound may make labor epidurals quicker and more accurate

NCT ID NCT07669441

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 30, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This study tests whether using an ultrasound to mark the best spot on a woman's back early in labor helps doctors place the epidural needle correctly on the first try. One hundred pregnant women will have their backs marked either by ultrasound or by feeling the spine with hands. A different doctor, who doesn't know which method was used, then performs the epidural. The goal is to see if ultrasound reduces needle attempts and procedure time.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Preprocedural Spinal Ultrasound

What this could lead to

If it works, this could make epidural pain relief during labor faster and more reliable, reducing discomfort from multiple needle attempts.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial with only 100 participants, so results may not apply to all hospitals or patients. The ultrasound method may not improve success rates significantly.
