ER ultrasound may predict ventilator need in breathing emergencies

NCT ID NCT02273687

First seen Nov 19, 2025 · Last updated Apr 25, 2026 · Updated 20 times

Summary

This study looked at 104 adults arriving at the emergency room with severe breathing trouble. Doctors used an ultrasound to measure how far the diaphragm (the main breathing muscle) moved. The goal was to see if this measurement could predict who would need a breathing machine within the first four hours. The study did not test a treatment, but rather aimed to improve how doctors make quick decisions in emergencies.
