New nerve block may ease kids' pain after hip surgery

NCT ID NCT05832671

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tested whether an ultrasound-guided erector spinae nerve block can reduce pain after hip reconstruction surgery in children aged 2-7. Seventy children were split into two groups: one received the new nerve block, the other a standard caudal block. Researchers measured pain scores, how soon kids needed extra pain medicine, and how calm they were waking up from anesthesia.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Erector spinae muscle block (nerve block procedure)

What this could lead to

If it works well, this nerve block could become a standard way to manage pain after hip surgery in children, reducing the need for strong painkillers.

What could go wrong

This is a small, single-center study with only 70 children, so results may not apply to all kids or hospitals. Nerve blocks carry small risks like infection or bleeding.
