Ultrasound may replace scopes for tube checks in lung surgery

NCT ID NCT07465510

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether lung ultrasound can accurately confirm the position of a double-lumen breathing tube used in lung surgery. Researchers will compare ultrasound results with the standard method (fiberoptic bronchoscopy) and simple listening (auscultation) in 100 adults undergoing planned lung surgery. If ultrasound proves reliable, it could offer a faster, noninvasive alternative for checking tube placement.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that lung ultrasound is a reliable, quick, and noninvasive way to check breathing tube placement during lung surgery.

What could go wrong

This is a small observational study, not a treatment trial. Ultrasound may not be as accurate as the gold standard, and results may not apply to all patients or settings.
