New scan method could cut radiation and hospital visits for parathyroid patients

NCT ID NCT07068867

Summary

This study tested a new way to plan surgery for patients with overactive parathyroid glands, a condition that causes high calcium levels. Instead of using two types of scans, doctors tried using an ultrasound scan first. If the ultrasound gave a clear picture, patients could go straight to surgery, avoiding a second scan that uses radiation. The goal was to see if this simpler approach was just as accurate at finding the problem gland while being faster and safer for patients.
