Ultrasound may offer new way to measure breathing drive in ICU patients
NCT ID NCT07564258
First seen May 07, 2026 · Last updated May 15, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study looks at whether ultrasound images of the diaphragm can reliably measure how hard a patient is trying to breathe. Currently, a test called P0.1 is used in patients on ventilators, but it doesn't work well for those breathing on their own or using certain oxygen devices. Researchers will compare ultrasound measurements with the standard test in 40 intubated adults during a spontaneous breathing trial. If successful, this could lead to a non-invasive way to monitor breathing effort in more patients.
