New breathing tube designed to be seen on ultrasound
NCT ID NCT05941013
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests a special breathing tube that can be seen with ultrasound, making it easier for doctors to confirm it's in the right place. Twenty children undergoing heart procedures will be intubated with the tube, and researchers will check if ultrasound can detect it. The goal is to see if this approach could replace X-rays for verifying tube placement.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Ultrasound-detectable endotracheal tube (a special breathing tube visible on ultrasound)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to a safer, more reliable way to confirm breathing tube placement without X-rays.
What could go wrong
This is a very small, early feasibility study with only 20 participants. It only checks if the tube can be seen on ultrasound, not whether it improves patient outcomes.
