Could early radiation zap away facial pain for good?
NCT ID NCT06949436
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether giving Gamma Knife radiation early—within 2 years of diagnosis—can provide better pain relief for trigeminal neuralgia than waiting. About 80 adults with classic or idiopathic TN will be assigned to early treatment or standard care. Researchers will track pain control, medication use, and side effects over 2 years.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Gamma Knife stereotactic radiosurgery (focused radiation)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a faster, more durable pain relief option for trigeminal neuralgia, potentially reducing reliance on high-dose medications.
What could go wrong
This is a Phase 2 trial with only 80 participants, so results are preliminary. The procedure carries risks like facial numbness or other side effects, and it may not work for everyone.
