Common drug tested to save blood during major operations

NCT ID NCT04803747

Summary

This large, completed study tested whether a hospital policy of giving the drug tranexamic acid (TXA) to patients having major non-heart surgery would safely reduce the need for blood transfusions. Over 8,400 patients across many hospitals were involved. The trial aimed to see if TXA lowered transfusion rates without increasing the risk of dangerous blood clots after surgery.
