Experimental oil shows promise for rare brain energy disorder

NCT ID NCT02014883

Summary

This study tested whether a special dietary oil called triheptanoin could help people with GLUT1 deficiency syndrome, a rare genetic disorder where the brain struggles to get enough energy. Twenty patients over age 3 with confirmed genetic mutations and movement or seizure problems took the oil. Researchers measured if it reduced abnormal movements and seizures, improved walking and hand skills, and was safe to use.
