Could antibiotics unlock growth in starving kids?
NCT ID NCT07451171
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This study tests three different antibiotics in 60 malnourished Bangladeshi children with small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). The goal is to find which antibiotic best clears the overgrowth, which may help prevent stunted growth. Children receive one of the antibiotics for 15 days, and researchers check breath tests to see if the bacteria are gone.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
antibiotics (trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, metronidazole, amoxicillin-clavulanate)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could identify the best antibiotic to treat SIBO in malnourished children, potentially helping them grow better.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase trial with only 60 children, so results may not apply broadly. Antibiotics can cause side effects like diarrhea or allergic reactions.
