Could treating mild hypertension in pregnancy help babies?
NCT ID NCT05989581
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether treating mild high blood pressure (stage 1 hypertension) during pregnancy can improve baby birth weight. 74 pregnant people with blood pressure between 130-139/80-89 mmHg will be randomly assigned to either active treatment with blood pressure medication (labetalol or nifedipine) or usual care. The goal is to see if keeping blood pressure below 130/80 mmHg leads to healthier birth weights.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Labetalol or Nifedipine (blood pressure medication)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to better outcomes for pregnant people with mild hypertension and their babies, potentially informing a larger study.
What could go wrong
This is a very early, small pilot study with only 74 participants. It may not show a clear benefit, and results may not apply to all pregnant people.
