Less cutting, same protection: new thyroid cancer surgery trial aims to spare patients unnecessary harm

NCT ID NCT06554652

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated Apr 30, 2026 · Updated 23 times

Summary

This study tests whether a more targeted neck surgery (selective neck dissection) works as well as the standard more extensive surgery (modified neck dissection) for papillary thyroid cancer that has spread to only 1 or 2 small lymph nodes in the side of the neck. About 250 people aged 14 to 80 will be randomly assigned to one of the two surgeries. The main goal is to see if the less invasive approach keeps cancer from coming back while also improving quality of life.
