Not open to general applications. Only people the study team invites can take part.
Paused
Paused for now. It may or may not start again.
Ongoing
Running, but no longer taking on new participants.

The trial has finished. Results may not be published yet.
Stopped early
Stopped early, before it reached the end. That can be for many reasons, including safety.
Cancelled
Cancelled before anyone took part.

Expanded access (not trials)

Expanded access
Not a trial. This treatment can be requested outside a study, case by case, for people who qualify.
Expanded access (paused)
Not a trial. The treatment can normally be requested outside a study, but is unavailable right now.
Expanded access (ended)
Not a trial. The treatment could once be requested outside a study, but no longer can.
Approved
The treatment has been approved, so it is available normally rather than through this programme.

Summary

This trial investigates whether Potential Optimization Techniques (TOP) — a set of mental and behavioral strategies originally developed for French military personnel — can help nursing students feel more capable and less stressed. About 340 nursing students will either receive TOP training (a four-hour theory session plus six practical sessions over 10 months and a simulation exercise) or a control session. Researchers will measure changes in general self-efficacy over 24 months to see if TOP helps students cope with the demands of training.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Potential Optimization Techniques (TOP) — a structured set of psycho-cognitive and behavioral strategies for stress management and performance optimization
What this could lead to
If effective, TOP could provide a practical, self-directed tool to help nursing students manage stress, reduce burnout, and improve confidence during training.
What could go wrong
This is a single-site study with a specific student population, so results may not apply broadly. The intervention is time-intensive, and benefits may depend on consistent participation.

Study facts

What this study's own registry entry says, in plain language.

Phase

Not a phased trial

Phase numbers describe drug development. The registry uses this when they do not apply, as it does for trials of devices, procedures or behaviour changes, and for observational studies.

Participants

About 340 people

The number the study aims to enrol. It can still change while the study runs.

Expected to start

Sep 2026

An estimate. Start dates often move.

Expected to finish

Sep 2028

Lead sponsor

Other sponsor

The registry's catch-all category, for sponsors it does not file as a company, a government agency, or a research network.

Who can take part

This study's own entry requirements. Only the study team can say for certain whether you qualify.

Ages

Children (under 18), adults (18 to 64) and older adults (65 and over)

Inclusion Criteria: \- The participants in this study are nursing students enrolled in the 2025-2028 cohorts at the Esquirol and Clémenceau Nursing Training Institutes (IFSI), affiliated with the Hospices Civils de Lyon. Exclusion Criteria: * Current history of severe neuropsychiatric conditions (severe depressive disorder, severe anxiety disorder)-self-reported-or uncontrolled acute psychiatric symptoms during the study (severe anxiety, severe behavioral disturbances). * This criterion is incompatible with a pedagogical method like TOP, which falls outside the scope of psychology. The teaching skills involved in TOP do not enable the management of psychological disorders. However, they may complement psychological care within the context of these exclusion criteria.
