Could avoiding Pre-Radiation tooth removal protect jaw health?

NCT ID NCT07764887

First seen Aug 14, 2026 ยท Last updated Aug 14, 2026

Summary

This trial asks whether it is safe to skip the routine removal of impacted teeth before radiation therapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Half of the participants will have the extraction as usual, while the other half will not. The study will compare the risk of jaw bone damage (osteoradionecrosis) over two years, along with survival and quality of life, to see if omitting the procedure is a viable option.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ€” not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Omission of prophylactic impacted tooth extraction before radiotherapy
What this could lead to
If skipping the extraction is safe, patients could avoid an unnecessary dental procedure before cancer treatment, reducing discomfort and delays.
What could go wrong
The trial is early and noninferiority design; if omission increases jaw bone damage risk, it would be unsafe. Results may not apply to all patients.
