Your own tooth may be the best bone graft for dental implants

NCT ID NCT06773104

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study compared using a patient's own tooth as a bone graft versus using donor bone for immediate dental implants in the front teeth area. Twenty-four adults with non-restorable upper front teeth and thin bone plates received an implant right after tooth extraction, along with either an autogenous tooth bone graft or an allogeneic bone graft. The researchers measured labial bone thickness, marginal bone loss, bone density, and implant stability to see which graft type performed better.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

autogenous tooth bone graft or allogeneic bone graft (demineralized freeze-dried bone allograft)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that using a patient's own tooth as a bone graft works as well as or better than donor bone for dental implants, potentially improving outcomes in the aesthetic zone.

What could go wrong

This is a small, completed trial with only 24 patients, so results may not apply to everyone. Differences in bone healing or implant stability could still favor one graft type, and individual factors like oral hygiene or bone quality may affect outcomes.
