Partial tonsil surgery may cut sick leave and opioid use

NCT ID NCT07598201

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study compares two tonsil surgery methods in adults: full removal (extracapsular) and partial removal (intracapsular). The goal is to see if partial surgery allows a shorter sick leave and less need for opioid painkillers, while still being as effective at relieving tonsillitis symptoms after one year. Ninety adults with recurrent or chronic tonsillitis will be randomly assigned to one of the two procedures and followed for up to five years.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

surgical procedure (extracapsular tonsillectomy vs intracapsular tonsillectomy)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could show that partial tonsil surgery allows a shorter sick leave and less need for strong painkillers, while still being as effective as full removal.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial with only 90 adults, so results may not apply to everyone. The study is not yet recruiting, and the benefit of partial surgery may not hold up in larger studies.
