Scientists zap brains to boost navigation skills
NCT ID NCT05801861
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether magnetic pulses to the brain can change how we process space and remember locations during virtual navigation. Sixty healthy adults will receive either real or fake stimulation while performing memory tasks in a virtual maze. The goal is to see if brain waves linked to spatial awareness can be turned up or down, and whether that affects performance.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could reveal how brain stimulation might improve spatial memory or navigation, potentially aiding treatments for conditions like Alzheimer's.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage study with only 60 healthy participants, so results may not apply to patients. TMS can cause mild discomfort or headache.
