Can a nerve zap or a neck stretch silence the ringing in your ears?

NCT ID NCT07155733

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study tests two simple, drug-free treatments for chronic tinnitus (ringing in the ears) that hasn't improved with standard medical care. 45 adults will be split into three groups: one gets 10 sessions of mild electrical stimulation to a nerve in the ear, another does specific neck and jaw muscle exercises, and a third continues usual care. The goal is to see if either treatment reduces tinnitus severity and improves sleep quality.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (tVNS) via TENS device
What this could lead to
If successful, this could point toward a non-drug, non-invasive way to reduce tinnitus severity and improve sleep for people with chronic tinnitus.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 45 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The treatments may not outperform standard care, and benefits could be modest.
