New combo therapy aims to fix TSH suppression in thyroid cancer

NCT ID NCT07239674

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This phase 3 trial tests whether combining desiccated thyroid extract (DTE) with standard levothyroxine can help intermediate-to-high risk thyroid cancer patients reach their TSH suppression targets faster and more safely after surgery. Many patients on levothyroxine alone struggle to achieve the right TSH levels, risking recurrence or side effects like heart problems and bone loss. The study will enroll 646 participants across China to compare the combination therapy against levothyroxine alone.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Desiccated thyroid extract (DTE) combined with levothyroxine (L-T4)

What this could lead to

If it works, this combination could help more thyroid cancer patients reach their target TSH levels faster and with fewer side effects than current standard therapy.

What could go wrong

This trial hasn't started yet, and even if successful, the benefit may be modest. The combination may also cause over-suppression or other hormone imbalances.
