Hidden cancer cells force second surgery in over half of small thyroid tumors

NCT ID NCT06439745

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated Jun 10, 2026 · Updated 32 times

Summary

This study looked at 314 adults with small, early-stage papillary thyroid cancer (tumors 1-3 cm) that appeared to be confined to one spot with no signs of spread. Surgeons planned to remove only half the thyroid, but during the operation they checked nearby lymph nodes. In more than half of patients, hidden cancer was found in those nodes, requiring removal of the entire thyroid. The study highlights that even small thyroid cancers often have undetected spread, changing the surgical plan.
