Small thyroid tumors often hide spread, study finds

Summary
This study looked at 314 patients with small, seemingly contained papillary thyroid cancers who were scheduled for a partial thyroid removal (lobectomy). During surgery, doctors checked nearby lymph nodes and found hidden cancer spread in many cases, leading to a second surgery to remove the rest of the thyroid. The findings suggest that even small thyroid cancers may require more extensive initial surgery than previously thought.
