New scan could spare thyroid cancer patients from ineffective radiation
NCT ID NCT00673010
Summary
This study tested a new scanning method to predict how well standard radioactive iodine treatment works for thyroid cancer that has spread. Researchers used a different radioactive tracer (124-I) with PET scans to measure how much radiation would reach each tumor before giving the actual treatment (131-I). The goal was to identify patients who wouldn't benefit from the treatment, sparing them unnecessary radiation, and to customize doses for those who would benefit.
