Could a cheap vitamin shield the aging brain during heart surgery?
NCT ID NCT06326996
First seen Aug 03, 2026 · Last updated Aug 04, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether giving thiamine (vitamin B1) during coronary artery bypass surgery can reduce the memory and thinking problems that sometimes follow the procedure. Older adults with coronary heart disease who are scheduled for bypass surgery and have low thiamine levels may receive either a thiamine infusion or a placebo. Researchers will compare cognitive function, blood markers, and quality of life between the two groups to see if this simple intervention makes a difference.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Thiamine (Vitamin B1) infusion
- What this could lead to
- If effective, a low-cost thiamine infusion could help preserve memory and thinking skills in older adults after heart bypass surgery.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small early-phase trial, so results may not apply broadly. Thiamine is generally safe, but its benefit for cognition is unproven.
