Texts and trinkets: a new way to help teens stick with HIV meds?
NCT ID NCT07377760
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether daily text reminders, paired with small rewards like school supplies or sports items, can help adolescents (ages 15-19) with HIV take their antiretroviral medicine on time. 327 teens in Ethiopia will be split into three groups: two receiving different types of text reminders plus rewards, and one getting standard care. The goal is to see if this simple approach improves medication adherence and keeps teens in care.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
text message reminders and non-monetary incentives (e.g., school supplies, hygiene kits, sports items)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a simple, low-cost way to help teens with HIV stick to their daily medication and stay healthy.
What could go wrong
This is a behavioral study, not a drug trial, so it won't cure HIV. The approach may not work for everyone, and long-term effects are unknown.
