Could a simple TENS device ease labor pain without drugs?

NCT ID NCT07494539

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether a TENS device, which sends mild electrical pulses to the lower back, can help manage pain during labor induction. 132 pregnant women will either receive TENS plus standard care or standard care alone. The main goal is to see if TENS reduces or delays the need for an epidural.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) device

What this could lead to

If it works, TENS could offer a drug-free way to manage pain during labor induction, potentially reducing the need for an epidural.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study (132 participants) and TENS may not meaningfully reduce pain or delay epidural use. Results may not apply to all hospitals or labor situations.
