Telemedicine Check-Ins may slash ER trips for seniors

NCT ID NCT04008472

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tested whether regular telemedicine visits could prevent emergency room trips and hospital stays for elderly nursing home residents with multiple health problems. Over 400 residents in 9 French nursing homes received a telemedicine check-up every 3 months for a year, plus extra visits as needed. The goal was to see if this remote monitoring could catch health issues early and reduce unplanned hospital care.

What this could lead to

If it works, this could show that regular telemedicine check-ups help keep elderly nursing home residents healthier and out of the hospital.

What could go wrong

This trial is completed but results are not yet widely published, so we don't know if it truly reduced hospital visits. The approach may not work in all nursing homes or regions.
